A two hour workshop that will join the Ontario Language and Visual Art curricula.
INTRODUCTION:
I will introduce four picture books, each depicting a different style of art: Eric Carle's tissue paper art, Barbara Reid's plasticine sculpture, Lois Elhert's mixed media collage, and David Frampton's print making.(Please see photos of books below.)
This workshop is designed for teachers in the primary and early junior divisions.
Volunteers from the workshop participants will be asked to read each book. Two lesson plans, which combine Language and Art, will be offered for The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and The Song of Francis and the Animals by Pat Mora.(Please see Lesson Plans/Essays/Activities page)

A blank lesson plan will be provided. (Please see Lesson Plans/Essays/Activities page)
The "Integrated Language and Arts Activities" document (Please see Lesson Plans/Essays/Activities page) will be helpful to create these lesson plans.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
Participants will develop two additional lesson plans to complement the two models that are already provided. These four lesson plans will constitute a cross curricular unit plan linking Visual Art and Language curricular objectives through the study of picture books, and their use to explore language and art.
ART WORK:
There will be a station for each illustrator and participants will be actively involved in creating the art of each illustrator. I will model how each exemplar is to be completed and then I will be available to help and answer questions.
A list of art and language activities will be provided for each book. (Please go to Lesson Plans/Essays/Activities page).
Please note that three brief essays provided on this site:"The Importance of Picture Books for Children", "How to Use Picture Books in the Classroom", and "Post Modern Picture Books" address various issues related to the topic. (Please go to Lesson Plans/Essays/Activities page)
